What I do, when I'm doing it for fun

It's all about the challenge...

Of course, keeping a marriage together, and raising children is about as much challenge as I care to handle.  I try to keep this area as clear of obstacles as I can.

So what else?

Personally:

I am a laid-back guy, with a chatty streak.

I was recently described by a business acquaintance as being "an anomaly; an engineer with a personality".  Clearly she thought I was unattractive.

I am an inventive hacker with more curiosity than drive

I can entertain myself for weeks on end creating the concept for a new program or device.

I am a game fanatic

I've had to swear off computer gaming; because it just sucks all of my focus and energy. On the other hand I still love a good game of scrabble; along with a host of other board games and card games.

I am an uninspired sportsman and athlete.

I really enjoy hunting, fishing, golf, canoeing,  cross-country and even back-country skiing.  Yet, I seldom do any of these things.  It's not that I'm lazy; at least I don't think that's it.  These just never make the top of my priority list.  Somedays, I wish they would.

And the list goes on...

The At-home Challenge:

Teaching the kids how to think.

Two have flown the nest, and they still call for help and advise.  They are independent and brilliant young ladies, but they've a lot to learn yet.  They will do well in life.  Two more are just starting out, so I get to do it over again, and try not to repeat previous mistakes.  I like to teach them the things that the schools don't: creative thinking; and that's also just what they teach me.

Teaching the wife how to think.

Don't get me wrong, she's smarter than she knows... She's a smart, beautiful, talented woman with an artist's sensibilities and temperament.  So why doesn't she see things my way more often?  Oh well, maybe in twenty more years...

Teaching myself how to think.

It's not so different from what I like at work.  I like to research and learn. I like to read about and learn about  Genealogy, Software Assurance, Software Architecture, Technology, Business, and many more things.  The games I like all have some element of skill.  I like to play games when I can learn from them.

Teaching, Learning, Discovering...
